Question about satellite orbits?

I know that the lower the orbit, the faster the speed and vice versa. However, when the satellite applies a delta-v in the velocity direction, the satellite in effect slows down because of the higher orbit. Soooo essentially it slows down by adding velocity? This seems awfully counter intuitive.
